Level: Beginner → Intermediate
Duration: 6–8 Weeks (or condense into 1–2 days for workshops)
Format: Instructor-led, live remote, or self-paced with practice files
Goal: Equip learners with the skills to confidently create, format, edit, and manage professional Word documents.


Course Objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Navigate the Word interface and customize the workspace
  • Create, save, and manage documents
  • Format text, paragraphs, and pages
  • Work with tables, images, shapes, and charts
  • Create professional documents such as letters, reports, forms, and flyers
  • Use intermediate tools such as styles, templates, track changes, mail merge, and document protection

 

Course Outline


Module 1: Introduction to Microsoft Word

Lesson Topics:

  • Understanding Word versions (365, 2019, 2021)
  • Word interface overview (Ribbon, Tabs, Groups, Quick Access Toolbar)
  • Creating, saving, and organizing documents
  • Opening, closing, and printing documents

Activities:

  • Create your first document
  • Practice saving documents in folders

Assessment: 5-question quick check


Module 2: Basic Editing & Text Formatting

Lesson Topics:

  • Typing and editing text
  • Cut, copy, paste, undo, redo
  • Font formatting (size, color, style, highlight)
  • Paragraph formatting (alignment, spacing, indentation)
  • Bullets and numbering

Activities:

  • Format a paragraph into a professional announcement

Assessment: Mini-assignment—format a provided block of text


Module 3: Page Layout & Document Design

Lesson Topics:

  • Margins, page size, and orientation
  • Headers, footers, and page numbers
  • Columns
  • Page borders & backgrounds
  • Using Themes for consistent design

Activities:

  • Create a professional letter with proper layout

Module 4: Working With Tables

Lesson Topics:

  • Insert a table
  • Add, remove, and resize rows/columns
  • Table design & styles
  • Sorting, alignment, shading
  • Converting text ↔ table

Activities:

  • Build a pricing table or schedule
 

Module 5: Graphics & Visual Elements

Lesson Topics:

  • Inserting pictures
  • Wrapping text around images
  • Shapes, icons, WordArt
  • SmartArt diagrams
  • Charts (importing from Excel)

Activities:

  • Create a simple flyer with images and shapes

Module 6: Styles, Templates & Professional Formatting

Lesson Topics:

  • Understanding Styles and Quick Styles
  • Creating custom Styles
  • Creating and modifying Templates
  • Using the Navigation Pane
  • Automatic table of contents

Activities:

  • Apply styles to a document and generate a TOC

Module 7: Review, Editing & Collaboration Tools

Lesson Topics:

  • Track Changes
  • Comments
  • Comparing two documents
  • Restricting editing
  • Document inspector

Activities:

  • Review and edit a partner’s document

Module 8: Mail Merge & Automation

Lesson Topics:

  • Creating mailing lists
  • Letters, labels, and envelopes using Mail Merge
  • Merging from Excel
  • Conditional merge fields (optional)

Activities:

  • Complete a full mail merge letter

Module 9: Advanced Tools (Optional)

Lesson Topics:

  • Creating fillable forms
  • Macros (basic recording only)
  • Advanced find and replace with wildcards

Activities:

  • Create an employee information form

Module 1 – Introduction to Excel

Learning Goals: Understand the Excel interface and basic functions.
Topics:

  • What Excel is used for
  • Workbook vs. worksheet
  • Ribbon, tabs, quick access toolbar
  • Cells, rows, columns, ranges
  • Entering and editing data
  • Saving, opening, and organizing workbooks
    Practice Exercise: Create a simple table (Name, Hours Worked, Pay Rate).

Module 2 – Formatting & Layout

Learning Goals: Make spreadsheets clean, readable, and professional.
Topics:

  • Column width, row height
  • Font, borders, alignment
  • Number formatting (currency, percent, date)
  • Cell styles & themes
  • Text wrapping & merge cells
    Practice Exercise: Format the table created in Module 1.

Module 3 – Basic Formulas & Functions

Learning Goals: Perform calculations in Excel.
Topics:

  • Basic formulas: +, –, ×, ÷
  • Relative vs. absolute cell references ($)
  • AutoFill and Flash Fill
  • Common functions:
    • SUM()
    • AVERAGE()
    • COUNT()
    • MAX(), MIN()
      Practice Exercise: Calculate pay totals and averages.

Module 4 – Working With Data

Learning Goals: Manage and organize data efficiently.
Topics:

  • Sorting (A–Z, Z–A, numbers, dates)
  • Filtering data
  • Find & Replace
  • Removing duplicates
  • Basic data validation (dropdown lists)
    Practice Exercise: Filter employees by department or pay status.

Module 5 – Charts & Visuals

Learning Goals: Turn data into graphs.
Topics:

  • When to use each chart type
    • Column
    • Bar
    • Pie
    • Line
  • Adding chart titles, legends, labels
  • Chart formatting tools
    Practice Exercise: Create a line chart showing monthly sales.

Module 6 – Tables & PivotTables (Beginners Level)

Learning Goals: Analyze large sets of data.
Topics:

  • Converting data into a table
  • Table filters & slicers
  • Introduction to PivotTables:
    • Rows, columns, values, filters
    • Summarizing large datasets quickly
      Practice Exercise: Create a PivotTable to summarize sales by product.

Module 7 – Intermediate Skills

Learning Goals: Automate tasks and improve productivity.
Topics:

  • IF statements
  • COUNTIF / SUMIF
  • Conditional formatting
  • Protecting sheets and workbooks
    Practice Exercise: Highlight overdue payments with conditional formatting.

Module 8 – Final Project
